How can new parents or teachers identify a child with learning disabilities? This website gives clear guidelines as to what is important to check out and how to find early signs of learning disabilities in a student. This can be a very helpful resource. Children can have many different characteristics and behaviors, but this gives you a list of red flags. As a new teacher or even parent, it is important to know the signs to look out for and get help when necessary. The next website that I found is an important read for newly employed or even older teachers. It clearly and concisely divides learning disabilities into five categories. Diversity Laws and Policies

I chose this interesting set of policies and guidelines created for European educators. Europe is known for having various ethical and cultural groups living in close proximity. These guidelines teach teachers how to foster respect for cultural diversity in the classroom and beyond. I chose to focus on a few that I found to be meaningful and important for all educators worldwide. Firstly, promote intergroup contact . Students may want to stick to others from their cultural group. Encourage students to branch out and work with others. This will increase their acceptance of others. They will learn that it is nice to work from others with different backgrounds and groups. Another important one is to provide "education about religion and beliefs" in a balanced and human rights framework. Week 5 - 2

I chose the article “I Had Finally Found a Place for My Son”, from the New York Times. It discusses Green Chimney’s, a school on a farm in New York State. Traditional schooling was not working for Xander. He had ADD and dyslexia. He was withdrawn, quiet and not completing his schoolwork. Xander felt at home immediately in Green Chimney’s and began to flourish. The decided to write about this article because I wanted to bring out an idea. As teachers we need to learn our students. Some may be visual learners, some auditory and some may do well with hands-on learning. However, it is important to note that some children will need something different. Perhaps if this was more well – known, more students could succeed in a regular classroom.
